The American Cultures requirement is a Berkeley campus requirement, the one course that all undergraduate students at Cal need to take and pass in order to graduate. The requirement was instituted in 1991 to introduce students to the diverse cultures of the United States through an intergative and comparative framework. Courses are offered in more than forty departments in many different disciplines at both the lower and upper division level. Students may complete the AC requirement at any time in their Berkeley career, but are encouraged to do so as early as possible. The AC requirement is meant to be part of the Berkeley experience - not a burden, and can be a compliment to any curriculum or major path. Students should speak with their academic advisor about options within various disciplines, which include: courses here at UC Berkeley, at local community colleges, as well as online courses.
