Community College proposal for American Cultures Courses
The American Cultures center also reaches out to California community colleges. We invite community college instructors to the American Cultures Center where they may use AC course resources such as outlines and reading lists of approved American cultures courses. American Cultures courses at Community Colleges provide opportunities for community college students to satisfy the American cultures requirement before they transfer to Berkeley.
Community college instructors may teach Berkeley-approved American cultures courses at their colleges. A Berkeley faculty committee approves courses. Any instructor may propose a course to the committee, but the college must be involved in the approval process because of articulation. Check with your college's articulation officer about this. For details on the content of the requirement please refer to the Instructor Guidelines.
The American cultures center no longer offers a summer seminar for community college teachers interested teaching American cultures courses at their college. However, we welcome your questions and encourage you to work with our staff on preparing your course proposals to satisfy the American Cultures Graduation Requirement.

General
- Please DO NOT submit the standard "course outline" form.
- All course proposals, whether submitted by community college or by Berkeley faculty, are reviewed in the same manner and against the same criteria by a Berkeley faculty committee. The committee will notify the instructor and articulation officer in writing of its decision
- Courses must be at least three semester units or four quarter units.
- Berkeley must accept the course for transfer credit—i.e., the course must be included in the articulation agreement.
- Courses devoted to development of general skills—e.g., 1A or 1B reading and composition courses—are not eligible for American cultures approval.
- When an approved course is offered in sections with different material, each section must be approved by the committee.
- When the instructor of an approved course changes, the new instructor should apply for approval of his or her version of the course.
